First Circular

The 17th International Finno-Ugric Students’ Conference will be held in Tallinn, Estonia from August 3 to August 7, 2000. The central topic of the conference is Trends in the contemporary Finno-Ugric world

Panels. The conference will work in six panels:

  1. Linguistics
  2. Literature
  3. Folklore, folk belief, music, music, mythology, etc.
  4. History, ethnology, archaeology
  5. Regional issues, sociology, demography, youth problems and the ethnic aspect thereof
  6. Relations between Finno-Ugric students and universities (Youth Association of Finno-Ugric Peoples)

Working languages. Presentation languages include all Finno-Ugric languages as well as English, German and Russian. The abstracts of your presentation should be written in Estonian, Finnish, Hungarian, English or Russian. The presentation and the abstracts are to be in different working languages. The indicated presentation language must not change. The maximum length of each presentation is 15 minutes plus 5 minutes for discussion.

The registration deadline is March 15, 2000.

Completed registration forms should be returned to the mailing address IFUSCO, Tallinn Pedagogical University, Narva mnt. 25, Tallinn 10120, ESTONIA or sent by electronic mail to the address ifusco@tpu.ee or faxed on the number +372-6409 136.

The abstracts are to be mailed or sent by electronic mail to the organising committee by May 1, 2000. The abstracts should be typed or printed, the maximum length being 1 page, minimum ½ typed pages (900 characters).

The participation fee will be 125 United States dollars (US$), citizens of the Russian Federation are exempted. Travel expenses must be covered by the participant. The fee includes accommodation (four nights), meals, conference materials, admission to cultural events and excursions.

The participant is expected to contribute to the cultural events scheduled, or take along publications both scholarly and literary concerning Finno-Ugric peoples for the book fair to be organised. The publications may be donated to the organising body, should it be possible. Songs, recordings of music and instruments are also welcome.

The aim of the conference is to formulate a declaration on the present situation of the Finno-Ugric world and its trends of development.

Please indicate if you wish to go on to attend the Congressus Nonus Internationalis Fenno-Ugristarum (FU9) in Tartu, free of charge for the participants of the IFUSCO, the board and lodging expenses in Tartu are on the participant. Whether the IFUSCO organising committee will engage in these questions will be determined by the number of participants interested.

The second circular will specify the schedule and transport arrangements.
