of the Consultative Committee
of Finno-Ugric Peoples
for 1997

1. Sessions of the Consultative Committee:

– in March, Tver (Russia);
– in September, Helsinki (Finland).

2. Meetings of Co-ordinators:

– February: Tallinn (Estonia);
– August, St. Petersburg (Russia).

3. Preparation and conducting of seminars:

The Consultative Committee will initiate and participate in organisation of international seminars:

– on problems of ecology in Finno-Ugrian territories of the Russian Federation (May – June, in Syktyvkar);

– on the international law and the national legislation of the Russian Federation and its administrative units on problems of indigenous peoples and national minorities (October, in Petrozavodsk);

– promotes international activities on the problems of Finno-Ugric peoples. …

4. International contacts:

– participation in the session of the UN Working Group on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (July, in Geneva);

– participation in the session of the UN Open Working Group on Completion of the Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (November, in Geneva);

– participation in the International Day of Indigenous Peoples of the World (August, in New York).

5. The Consultative Committee:

– assists in preparation and organisation of the International Folklore Festival of Finno-Ugric Peoples;

– assists in preparation and organisation of the congress of the Youth Association of Finno-Ugric Peoples (September, in Tartu);

– assists in organisation of the Pan-Finno-Ugrian Days (October);

– promotes realisation of aims and objectives of the International Decade of Indigenous Peoples of the World in the Russian Federation and its administrative units;

– promotes the design of target programs within the framework of TACIS and other international foundations.

6. Activities on implementation of the decisions and recommendations of the 2nd World Congress of Finno-Ugric Peoples:

the main work on the following problems:

– mass media and information – Estonia,

– public health services, demography and ecology – Udmurtia,

– politics – Karelia,

– language, culture, education and religions – Mari El,

– youth – the Youth Association of Finno-Ugric Peoples,

– economy – Mordovia.

7. The Consultative Committee promotes the development of direct contacts between the Finno-Ugric peoples at various levels and areas.
